Disaster Mitigation
Hazard mitigation reduces loss of life & property by minimizing the impact of disasters. It begins with local governments identifying natural disaster risks & vulnerabilities that are common in their area. After identifying these risks, they develop long-term strategies to reduce or eliminate impacts.
Mitigation Planning
Jurisdictions and Special Districts within Pottawattamie County participate in a multi-jurisdictional disaster mitigation planning effort and strategy. The adopted plan is reviewed annually and developed to meet the standards identified in the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000, Public Law 106-390; specifically 44 Code of Federal Regulations 201.6. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reviews this plan every five years to ensure local jurisdictions are meetings the planning standards within the law, and once approved by FEMA, plan participants are eligible for access to identified federal and state funding assistance for mitigation activities.
Public & Stakeholder Participation
The public and stakeholders are encouraged to review the Disaster Mitigation Plan and provide comments/ideas on goals, strategies, and priorities to reduce the impacts of identified hazards within the overall planning area and/or your specific community.
The active approved plan is available below on an annual bases. Draft updates to the plan are also posted on this site. Anyone with comments/ideas is encourage to provide such using this website's "Contact Us" messaging portal in the "Information" tab of the website tool bar or by clicking the messaging icon in the lower right hand corner of this page.
All suggestions are reviewed for consideration in the updating of this plan.
